Civility

Evolution is a wonderful thing.

It has given us hands to make things with.

It has given us language and emotions to communicate with.

But evolution is driven by a selfish gene.

And it has developed fists to fight with, and anger and rage to help us defend ourselves.

Urges to reproduce keep the genes alive but the line between reproduction and rape can be all to easily crossed.

Evolution has also given us a mind that is self aware, has empathy towards others and can think with reason.

What makes us human is the ability to be civil. To be civil is to have those animal instincts to be angry, to have urges that can’t be immediately fulfilled, to have the desire to control, to be jealous — but at the same time to have the strength of character to deal with these emotions in a manner that doesn’t harm others. That is what it means to be civil. To be in control of the animal instincts that made us.
