Sugary dilemma

I started a new diet this year: Michael Moseley’s Fast 800 Keto. In the two weeks before I started I cut out all sugary sweet treats, which made things easier. For around three weeks I followed the diet rather well – probably eating between 800 and 1000 calories a day between 11am and 7pm and definitely below 50g of carbs each day. I hope this diet will take me quickly to my target weight of 80kg and a waist of 89cm. I was 102kg and 114cm respectively at the start of the diet. I really want to get back to a whole food plant based diet as soon as I can.

At the start of February I started to allow myself a couple of pieces of dark chocolate but this was not a good move. It seemed to trigger a craving for food and I started eating earlier and snacking more. Then two days ago I had a big sugary blowout: hot chocolate, biscuits, cake, and a sweet pastry. The next day I tried to get back on track but it was hard. I enjoyed some wine and fruit cocktails that evening too.

Awake in the middle of the night I was suffering and I vowed to make a list of all the problems that refined sugar can cause:

  • Bloating
  • Indigestion and acid reflux
  • Sugar high, sugar crash – neither feel good
  • Itchy bum
  • Dental issues
  • Cravings for food
  • Weight gain

I will look back to this list the next time I have cravings for sugary food.
